After the tomb: The 11 Disciples

After the Tomb

Luke 24:36-49

A lot has happened to the disciples at this point. They have been with Jesus for three years after leaving their homes, jobs and families to follow him. They’ve been through highs and lows, they’ve encountered miracles and wonders of the kingdom to come and, they’ve been through hell and back watching their friend and teacher King Jesus, scourged at the cross and crucified to death. I think if I was a disciple, waiting, not knowing what was going on, I’d be all over the place! After meeting with two disciples on the road to Emmaus, Jesus then appears to the eleven (and others) and proves to them that he is risen. They were ecstatic at the sight of the risen Jesus even though they still did not understand.

We can all go through doubts and confusion with our faith, we can feel distant from the risen Jesus and can be struck with worries and anxiety. But King Jesus is alive and reigns with his father on high revealing many signs and wonders to us even now, over two thousand years after his resurrection!

What did Jesus reveal to his remaining disciples that he still reveals to us today?

Firstly, Jesus reveals his closeness with humanity. One thing I love about Jesus is the way he builds relationships with people around food. In this passage, once again Jesus shows his humanity through eating with his friends. Jesus knows what it is like to be human because he too walked this earth as one of us, sharing everything we go through, even death! Turn to him whenever you need, and he will empathise and comfort!

Secondly, Jesus reveals more about himself through scripture. To the disciples he ‘supernaturally unlocked their understanding to receive the revelation of the scriptures’. Just as he did with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, he reveals himself through prophecy of old and opens the minds of those who have not fully understood his divinity. Jesus supernaturally did this for the disciples and he does it for us today. Immerse yourself in his word and pray for fresh revelation daily, perhaps make a habit of it (Jesus got up early in the morning – maybe something we should try).

And finally, Jesus reveals to us the Holy Spirit – the helper – sent to be with us and for us. The disciples received the Holy Spirit for the first time at the day of Pentecost when miracles happened, and spiritual gifts were given to those who believed. That same Holy Spirit is still present with us today! Earnestly seek the gifts of the Holy Spirit and see the transformation of the church and of society around you.
